What exactly are menthol crystals?

The basis of menthol is natural and essential oils, which are mostly extracted from the mint plant. Menthol is not only found in this plant, but also in sage, oregano, basil and thyme.

However, the majority comes from peppermint and similar related plants.

From this extracted menthol, the so-called menthol crystals are produced using a special freezing process.

Menthol crystals vary in color from transparent to white. The crystals are solid at room temperature but melt at 42-43°C.

The main application area for menthol crystals is the sauna and spa area. But how exactly the crystals are used in the sauna and why they are so good for us will be explained in the next sections.

How do I use menthol crystals in the sauna?

Basically, menthol crystals are used in the sauna to intensify a sauna infusion or to provide an additional freshness and cooling effect.

They are known to be particularly effective in relieving pain. Furthermore, their cooling effect creates a particularly pleasant sauna climate. The fresh air also clears the airways.

There are different ways to use the menthol crystals, depending on your preference:

1. Place menthol crystals (3-4 crystals, depending on the size of the crystals and the sauna) directly on the hot sauna stones. Just make sure that the crystals do not fall through the stones onto the heating rods.
2. Place the crystals in the sauna bucket filled with water (or with a sauna infusion mixed in) and pour in as usual.
3. Infusion with crushed ice: Form crushed ice into an ice ball with your hands and carefully press the crystals into the "ball". The slow melting of the ball on the sauna stones ensures a long-lasting effect of the crystals

There are different ways in which menthol crystals can be used as an infusion.

The effect without water is completely different than if you add the crystals to the sauna infusion. This is absolutely a matter of taste and should simply be tried out by you.
